History and evolution of the institution
The Anuradhapura Provincial Ayurveda Hospital is the main Ayurveda hospital in the North Central Province, centered in the Nuwara kalawiya area of the Anuradhapura District. Fulfilling a long-held desire among the people of the area, the foundation stone of the Anuradhapura Provincial Ayurveda Hospital was laid on 14th September 1956 by the then Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, the late Hon. S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike Sri Mathanan. Subsequently, on 22nd February 1964, the then Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, the Hon. Mrs. Sirimavo Bandaranaike, inaugurated the Anuradhapura Provincial Ayurveda Hospital as a hospital with residential facilities. This hospital is unique because it is located in the heart of the city, in the Nuwaragampalatha east Divisional Secretariat Division, amidst many major government institutions, and is also located in an important location in terms of transportation facilities.
This is the only place in Sri Lanka where the main Western Hospital and the main Ayurvedic Hospital are located next to each other. Dr. Nanayakkara was the first Medical Superintendent here. The old residents of the city remember with respect that since the inception of the hospital, a large number of patients flocked to this hospital for treatment, and that the treatment service here was at a very high level. It should also be noted with gratitude that the medical superintendents who were in charge of the administration of the hospital from time to time made great efforts to improve the service of the hospital and were engaged in patient treatment with great dedication under minimal facilities.
At that time, the hospital staff included all the staff that should be present in a major hospital, including the Medical Superintendent, medical staff, nursing staff including the Hedi Palika, junior staff led by the Minor Services Controller, auxiliary staff, etc. The entire staff was steadfast in the face of various challenges and obstacles faced by the Ayurvedic field at that time and dedicated themselves to providing quality service with the sole objective of curing patients.
Another milestone was marked by the establishment of Provincial Council powers under the 13th Amendment to the Constitution of Sri Lanka. A Provincial Ayurveda Department was established in 1987, with the Provincial Ayurveda Commissioner as its head. Under this, the hospital, as a Provincial Ayurveda Hospital, was regulated and developed by the Provincial Ayurveda Department. This enabled the hospital to expand its administrative boundaries and take many steps towards the development of hospital services under the close supervision and guidance of a Provincial Ayurveda Commissioner. Accordingly, Dr. W. Piyadasa was appointed as the first Provincial Ayurveda Commissioner, followed by Dr. P. Balalla, Dr. Chandrasena, Dr. G.W.J. Senaratne, Dr. Ashoka Keerthilatha, Mr. Neil de Alwis, Dr. Kumara Alwis, Dr. Supipi Sanghamittha, Dr. Dhanapala Hettiarachchige and the current Provincial Ayurveda Commissioner Dr. Priyani Malkanti Godage contributed to the progress of the Anuradhapura Ayurveda Hospital from time to time.
Also, the dedication and service rendered by former hospital director Dr. Kumari Kumarasekara for the development of this hospital is immense.
The two-storey outpatient building, which was opened on 4th March 2006 by the Prime Minister of the Republic of Sri Lanka, Hon. Ratnasiri Wickramanayake, consisted of an outpatient examination department, a clinical department, an auditorium, a laboratory, a hospital office and a director's department.
Currently, nearly 400 patients come for treatment daily, and 15 clinics provide special treatment daily. The outpatient department provides treatment for patients every day of the week and on special holidays.
The clinics held in the outpatient department include eye clinic, panchakarma clinic, nutrition counseling clinic, beauty clinic, fracture clinic, surgery clinic, dermatology clinic, acid-base disorders clinic, kidney clinic, non-communicable diseases clinic, cancer clinic, pediatrics, respiratory diseases, joint diseases, gynecology, Chinese acupuncture and primary care. Some of these clinics are held 03 days a week, while some are held once a week. A large number of patients attend these clinics, and doctors have made great dedication to the patients outside their working hours and have provided free services. The residential section consisting of 116 beds consists of two female wards and two male wards and 16 paid rooms, both air-conditioned and non-air-conditioned. It also consists of a panchakarma section and a massage section, which have been established for the convenience of patients.
The medicines produced by the hospital's pharmaceutical manufacturing facility meet more than 2/3 of the hospital's requirements. The hospital's production capacity has been greatly increased, which has enabled it to reduce the cost of purchasing manufactured medicines. The hospital's herbal garden is being further improved, and herbal gardens are being established to obtain the medicines required for production. A branch office that can be used for Ayurvedic educational programs and a walking path have also been created for the convenience of patients.
A biogas unit has been installed in the pharmaceutical manufacturing facility, and biogas will be used in the manufacturing facility for pharmaceutical production.
Anuradhapura Provincial Ayurvedic Hospital is a popular and well-respected hospital, having won third place in the National Productivity Awards in 2015, 2018, and second place in 2020.

This pay room complex is located on the top floor of the Anuradhapura Provincial Ayurveda Hospital and consists of 16 independent rooms with all the neccessary facilities.. This consists of 08 air conditioned rooms and 08 non air conditioned rooms.
A patient who wish to be admitted, should come to the Provincial Ayurveda Hospital and inquire at the Outpatient Unit (OPD) Issuer. In this case, one caregiver must stays with the patient and is charged a daily fee for treatment. Meals are provided only to the patient and if the caregiver also need food an extra payment must be made daily. However, in this case, each patient has to pay at least every 3 days in the first instance.
This paid room complex is not segregated into male and female, and if a doctor recommends it for the patient, the patient can appoint any member of their family as a guardian. These patients are also treated under the full supervision of one doctor.
