    With the establishment of Provincial Council powers in accordance with the 13th Amendment to the Constitution of Sri Lanka, the North Central Provincial Department of Ayurveda was established in 1987 and Dr. W. Piyadasa was appointed as the first Provincial Ayurveda Commissioner.

Mission

Improving the prevention, treatment and research services by making meaningful use of the Ayurvedic philosophy, enhancing the quality and conservation and promotion of traditional medicine and medicinal plant cultivation and enhancing the production of medicine with transparency and with the good participation of Ayurveda service and other stakeholders.

Community Health Programs

In order to improve the health of the people living in the North Central Province and ensure health security, projects aimed at implementing awareness programs, practical training, workshops, etc. at the Grama Niladhari Division level covering all Divisional Secretariat Divisions through Ayurvedic Community Health Medical Officers, providing the necessary infrastructure to bring about positive changes in lifestyle in accordance with Ayurvedic principles to improve the quality of life, and implementing necessary health facilities and health consultation services for the people who have difficulty in accessing health facilities are being implemented under this. These programs are being implemented under seven zones covering 29 Divisional Secretariat Divisions.
